Reflections on a Life Well-Lived

In the Beginning...CYNTHIA SUAD BROWN was born on April 23, 1955, in Newark, New Jersey, to Thomas L. and Marjorie Brown. She attended Catholic elementary and middle schools before graduating from Weequahic High School in 1972. Following graduation, she attended Berkeley Secretarial School in East Orange, where she completed the Professional Secretarial Program.

Cynthia later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University–Newark. A Passion for Service...In 1974, Cynthia began a rewarding career in municipal government with the City of East Orange as a Clerk Stenographer in the Department of Neighborhood Facilities. Through dedication, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to excellence, she steadily advanced through the ranks while earning certifications in administrative support and municipal government.

Former Mayor John C. Hatcher Jr. appointed her Rent Leveling Administrator. She was later appointed by the East Orange City Council as Director of the legislative body's administrative office. Cynthia subsequently served as Administrative Clerk in the Office of the City Clerk before being appointed Deputy City Clerk by former Mayor Cardell Cooper, a position to which she was reappointed by former Mayor Robert L. Bowser.

Cynthia earned her designation as a New Jersey Registered Municipal Clerk in 1997 and became a Certified Municipal Clerk through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks in 2000. In 1998, she made history when she was appointed by the East Orange City Council as the first Muslim to serve as a Municipal Clerk in the State of New Jersey. Throughout her distinguished career, Cynthia held numerous leadership positions within the Essex County Municipal Clerks Association, culminating in her election as President in 2004. She was also an active member of the New Jersey State Municipal Clerks' Association, where she chaired the Scholarship Committee.

Her trailblazing public service earned her widespread recognition as an exemplary public servant and community leader. Among her many honors were recognition from the Essex County League of Muslim Voters, the Shirley Chisholm Award presented by the late Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, the Unsung Hero Award from the NAACP of the Oranges & Maplewood, and numerous other commendations celebrating her extraordinary service and leadership.

A Woman of Deep Faith...Cynthia's unwavering commitment to Islam guided every aspect of her life. She was a devoted member of the Essex County Muslim community and faithfully worshipped at Masjid As'Haabul Yameen in East Orange. She was a founding member of the Masjid's Women's Auxiliary and served on its Elders Council. Cynthia was also a founding member and past President of the Coalition of Muslims in Government, an organization dedicated to supporting Muslim public servants and strengthening civic engagement. At the time of her passing, she was serving as Executive Board Chairwoman of the Council on American-Islamic Relations–New Jersey (CAIR-NJ).

Through every role she held, Cynthia championed justice, understanding, compassion, and service, working tirelessly to uplift not only the communities where she lived and worked but all those whose lives she touched. “Joie de Vivre” (The Joy of Living)...Cynthia truly embraced life as "a joy to be lived and not a problem to be solved." Her faith was her foundation, and her family was the center of her world.

She cherished traveling with her loved ones, faithfully making the family's annual pilgrimage to Orlando, Florida, first with her parents and beloved daughter, Najah, and later creating treasured memories with her grandchildren, Na'ilah and Halim. Her adventurous spirit also led her to explore destinations throughout the world.

A Time to Remember...Cynthia lived unapologetically and authentically. She met every challenge and embraced every opportunity with determination, grace, and optimistic realism. She spoke with conviction and clarity, led with integrity, and carried herself with a confidence rooted in faith, wisdom, and purpose. Beyond her many professional accomplishments, Cynthia's greatest legacy was found in the kindness of her heart. 

Those blessed to know her relied upon her wisdom, candor, and remarkable ability to speak the truth with both honesty and love. She chose compassion over judgment and consistently sought the good in others. To her family and friends, Cynthia was a source of strength, encouragement, and comfort. She inspired those around her through her generosity, resilience, and belief in the power of faith and service. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, her spirit will forever live on in the countless lives she touched through her love, wisdom, and kindness.

A Time to Return...On August 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends, Cynthia Suad Brown peacefully returned to Allah. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Najah Hadiyah Akbar; her beloved grandchildren, Na'ilah and Halim; her cousins, Jamal R. Brown (Janet) and Alana; her nephew, Justin; her adopted nephew, Andre N. Virgil, Jr. and a host of extended family members, cherished friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing her.

May we honor Cynthia not only by remembering her remarkable life, but by carrying forward the values she embodied—love, faith, integrity, compassion, and service. 

Her voice may now be silent, but her legacy will continue to inspire and resonate for a lifetime.
